Bjørnefjorden Gjestetun is located at Hauge farm in Os, a 30 minute drive south of Bergen. The Guesthouse has 30 bedrooms in addition to meeting facilities, party venues, sitting rooms with fireplaces and a lovely restaurant. The farmstead was once owned by the Lyse Monastery (Lysekloster) which was established in 1146. The stead contains five houses and the view over the fjord is simply breathtaking.
Today’s Bjørke family is the eighth generation located at the Hauge farmstead. Directly next to the reception you will discover a local Viking grave. Vikings were buried in mounds and often had items placed with them in the ground such as favorite pets, weapons, armor and even ships and horses along with symbolic and often decorative items of power.
The oldest building on the property is the barn which was built in 1655. Today it houses some of the guestrooms. The farm itself was a part of the Lyse Monastery (Lysekloster), a wealthy and powerful religious community founded by Bishop Sigurd from Bergen. At one time they governed over 200 farms in the local area.
The guesthouses sit atop a large garden, a few hundred meters in the hills above the majestic Bjørnefjorden (Bear fjord). From the stead you can see across to Folgefonna (one of Norway’s largest glaciers), Rosendal and the Tysnes mountains. The farm is a ten minute walk from the center of Os. The distance to Lysøen, the fairy-tale summer house of violinist Ole Bull, is not far away and the little ferry that takes you across can easily be biked to.
There are several walking paths and jogging paths in the near vicinity. Depending on how hearty you are you could combine a jog with a swim in the fjords but keep in mind that they can get quite cold!
The Bjørnefjorden Golf-club is on the family property, just across the street, where you can swing your clubs at the nine hole course. If you would rather not be outdoors you have the option of trying out the new and top-of-the-line golf simulator in the club house. This might be a better option in the winter depending on the weather. We can assist in booking your tee time and any equipment you might need.
If you would prefer some cultural activities you could visit Ole Bull’s summer villa in Lysøen, not far away, or perhaps the new community house in Os where there are lots of concerts and activities.
If you would like us to tailor-make an activity pack for you we are more than happy to help you. Perhaps you would like to try your hand at rowing an Oselvar (Viking-age vessel), ride in a horse and carriage, paddle in a canoe or even have a mini boot camp before dinner? Whatever your preference, let us help you get it all organized for you.
